Choosing Chicago Cooking Classes

The Windy City is best known for heart-attack inducing deep dish pizza and bratwursts, but there are plenty of gourmet tutors out there willing to provide cooking classes for a much more varied number of dishes.  Whether you are looking for foreign food, vegetarian options, or family delights, there are a multitude of Chicago cooking classes that you can check out.

The Chopping Block is a well-known specialty food outlet that provides great quality groceries in addition to a number of cooking classes.  One such course is the $85 “do it yourself steakhouse” meal course, which offers students the chance to replicate a five-star meal (shrimp cocktail, strip steak, twice-baked potatoes, and lava cake) within the confines of their own kitchen.  Other classes include the Italian feast, in which participants learn the fastest ways to dice tomatoes, onions, shallots, and mushrooms.  These classes allow you to have your fill of beer and wine while you learn and cook, making it fun for a date night or out with friends.

Cook au Vin offers cooking classes that are as good as they sound.  This French restaurant boasts expert chefs who are willing to hold your hand as you navigate through all the complexities of haute cuisine.  Even if you do not know which end of the knife to use, the staff are friendly and relate their experiences and stories with the class.  The sessions may be a bit long for some persons’ tastes: at three to five hours, it can be frustrating for those who do not have patience.  For those who bring enough wine and are willing to make mistakes, however, it can be a great night out.

Ranjana’s Indian Cooking Classes is a one-woman show.  These cooking classes delve into the mysteries of great Indian vegetarian food, examining the proper levels of spice and the components of Indian food.  This is well beyond the entrees served at buffet Indian restaurants, so be prepared to sweat a bit to the spicy peppers and get involved in the hands-on experiences.  Ranjana, furthermore, is renowned for her stories of cooking across the world: participants of her cooking classes claim that joining her in preparing a meal is really like being welcomed into her home as a friend.  Everything from chutney to fried samosas to paneer to nan bread is on the menu, along with whatever other ingredients she happens to have on hand for her cooking classes.
